HOT IN AUGUST – FOTOGALERIE SUMMER BREAK
Summer is a season of contradictions — a time of lightness and leisure, but also of heat, tension, and a changing climate. HOT IN AUGUST brings together works that explore these many facets of August and summer: the joy of vacation and shared moments, the weight of rising temperatures, and the growing urgency of human impact on nature.
From the legendary vegetable fight on Berlin’s Oberbaumbrücke to sun-soaked memories of Southern Europe, from the soulful heat of Chicago’s South Side in the ’70s to the simmering protests of Germany’s Klimakleber movement — the exhibition reflects on the images, emotions, and politics that summer stirs.
HOT IN AUGUST was shaped through an open call, inviting artists from the Fotogalerie community and beyond to share their perspectives. The result is a diverse and international collection of photographic works that capture summer’s beauty, complexity, and contradictions — a season where respite meets resistance, and where every glimmer of light carries its own shadow.
